Reality TV

Ananova: Reality TV wannabes queue up to make a baby

More than 200 reality TV hopefuls queued up to conceive a baby with a stranger live on air for a £10,000 prize.

They were the victims of a spoof set up to see how far people would go to get on television, reports the Daily Mirror.

Contestants agreed to live in a "love hotel" with the least attractive being voted out each week.

The remaining two couples then had a race to conceive a child and win the cash.

One male contestant admitted: "It will be a real challenge for me - I'm gay."

Would you take part in such a competition? [via]

Whale Spotted In Central London

BBC: Whale spotted in central London

A whale has made its way up the River Thames to central London, where it is being watched by riverside crowds. The northern bottle-nosed whale, which is about 20ft (6m) long, was seen swimming past the Houses of Parliament and is still moving upstream.

"I saw it blow, it was a spout of water which sparkled in the air," said eyewitness Tom Howard-Vyne.

A rescue boat has been sent to protect the whale, believed to have passed the Thames Barrier on Thursday night.

Alison Shaw of the Marine and Freshwater Conservation Programme at London Zoo, said "this is extremely rare in British waters as they are normally found in deep waters in the North Atlant

Running Tracks In Cemetries

Ananova: Mayor wants running tracks in cemeteries

The mayor of Brazil's biggest city has announced plans to build running tracks in cemeteries.

Sao Paulo's Mayor Jose Serra wants to build circular tracks in 22 of the city's cemeteries, reports SP TV.

He hopes the running tracks, which would surround burial areas, will enable residents to exercise regularly.

But protesters say they do not want to "jog with ghosts" and are calling on the mayor to leave the dead in peace.

I'm not sure if the dead want to be trampled upon. [via]

Glow-In-The-Dark Pigs

Ananova: Pigs glow in the dark

Scientists have created pigs that glow in the dark.

The move is designed to help research into stem cell treatments for disease.

"There are partially fluorescent green pigs elsewhere," said Wu Shinn-Chih, assistant professor of animal science at the National Taiwan University.

"But ours are the only ones in the world that are green from inside out."

He added: "Even their hearts and internal organs are green."

Prof Wu said the fluorescent cells would show up during stem cell treatment of diseased organs, allowing physicians to monitor the healing progress.

I'm green with envy! [via]
